Is it worth it?
Yes! Therapy has been proven to help people combat anxiety, depression, addiction grief, and more! Although this is true for most mental health situations for certain cases such as schizophrenia or bipolar, drugs are perhaps the best means to manage the condition. Additionally, therapy is thought to rework the way the neuro pathways fire and work in your brain.

For each person the amount of time they may or may not need therapy is different. Our therapists will work with you to determine what this may look like for you specifically.

Can my relationships be saved?
Yes, relationship counseling can be very beneficial in the growth and healing of relationships between people! Additionally, relationship counseling is an evidence-based practice that has been shown to work! Relationships are a large aspect of human life and we understand how important they are to you! Humans are relational people, and it's important for us to feel healthy and peaceful in our relationships, and we can help you to get to this place.

Does this mean I'm weak or crazy?
No, in fact, if you are seeking help it means quite the opposite about you. Unfortunately, due to the stigma attached many people put off seeking help and in turn, are left to suffer for a long time because of it. It's reported that 9.5% of adults suffer from depression and over 18% suffer from some type of anxiety. Additionally, approximately 20% of the adults in America are dealing with a moderate to severe mental illness. When you decide to take a step towards a healthier life you are actually doing the harder and braver thing.

Do I need a prescription to feel better?
A prescription isn't always the appropriate means to help you get better but sometimes it is! Our counselors will work to gather all the necessary information about what you are going through before we recommend medication to you. Medication may be the best fit for you but it's important to explore all the options to see what will be the healthiest and most beneficial to you in the long run.

How long will therapy take?
There is no specific time frame when working on personal development and growth. Depending on the type of changes that you are looking to make and the variety of issues that you are attempting to work on, therapy can last from a few sessions to much longer. Some find therapy to be extremely beneficial and choose to make it a long-term process.
Medication consultation and ongoing medication management are generally the two main psychiatry services clients come to MTC for. Some psychiatrists may incorporate talk therapy and counseling into their treatment sessions as well, or they may refer clients to a therapist at MTC for concurrent psychotherapy sessions as part of the overall treatment plan.

What can I expect to achieve in therapy?
There are many benefits to engaging in therapy. Some of these include: gaining a better understanding of oneself, figuring out life goals and prospects, improving personal relationships, developing coping skills, enhancing problem-solving abilities, making positive changes to problem behaviors, and boosting self-esteem. Your therapist will work with you throughout this process and offer new insight to an issue that you have been struggling with. Do you accept Insurance?
We accept Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Quail Choice insurance. We are out-of-network providers for all other insurance plans. Many insurance policies offer partial reimbursement to see an out-of-network therapist; you may wish to consult with your insurance carrier regarding this benefit. We will be happy to provide you with an invoice that can be submitted to your carrier for reimbursement.

What is your Self Pay price options?
Our self-pay options vary depending on therapist and service provided. Our self-pay options start at $100 and can go up to $155 per session. Please contact us for specific pricing.

How often do I have to come in?
Once a week sessions are the standard for individual counseling, though clients are welcome to seek more frequent sessions if they are in crisis or want greater insight. Insurance typically pays for 1 session per week lasting 60min.

What kind of therapist are at your practice?
Many people incorrectly associate psychotherapy with the typical media depiction of a “Freudian” style session in which the therapist is sitting silently in the chair and nodding throughout the whole session. We take on a much more interactive and collaborative approach in our sessions. You can expect our therapists to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviors, the past and the present, and the conscious and unconscious.

Couples Therapy Questions

How can someone outside my relationship really help me?
That is certainly a valid question. However couples who have been together for some time tend to have begun to operate along certain patterns, often without even realizing it. Having a neutral third party can help you understand what is really happening in your relationship. Here’s an example. In the case of one couple the female partner felt that her voice was not being heard in the relationship. However, her partner felt put down. After simply observing them talk for a minutes certain patterns became obvious. When the woman spoke to her partner she looked at him but he looked at the floor. She also did most of the talking, he said very little. By simply suggesting that her husband looked at her while she spoke the woman said she finally felt as if he was listening to her. One small change made a huge difference.

If we can’t resolve things on our own, are we just not right for each other?
Relationships are wonderful. They are also very emotional. Much of the time couples trigger each other so they interact in a very emotional way and their usual logical, rational thought process tends to go out of the window. Often all it takes is the presence of a neutral third party to help a couple see their relationship in a different, less emotionally charged light and begin working on the real issues, as a team.

Why see a therapist, when I can talk to my friends?
Everyone discusses their relationships with their friends, so many wonder what a stranger, in the form of a therapist, could tell them that their supportive friends could not. Well, in a nut shell, experience. Couples therapists have worked with hundreds of different couples, all of them different, but often with some strikingly similar challenges to face. This gives them an insight and wisdom that no friend, who really only has knowledge of a few relationships, can match.

That actually very rarely happens. Usually, people bring the same patterns, the same ‘bad habits, from one relationship to the next and the same vicious cycle begins again. One thing that is of utmost importance in couples counseling though is learning about yourself. That means that even of the worst does come to the worst and you do part ways with your current partner you will be far better equipped for the next one.

Therapy takes too long, years. Who has time for that?
Many people do indeed think that to be effective couples therapy has to go on and on and on. The fact is though that many couples begin seeing and experiencing a real, positive difference in their relationship after just a few sessions. Some may need longer, every couple is different, but for the most part it is a short and effective process.

What if therapy just makes things worse?
People don’t really like talking about their problems, or things that are painful, so they sometimes believe that couple therapy will just make a bad situation worse. But the elephant is still in the room, it is not going away by itself. By committing to couples therapy the problems can all be addressed in a rational, neutral setting and while it might not be very easy it really is easier than suffering in silence and usually very successful, however big the problems seem

Will the therapist tell us to break up?
When a relationship is in trouble most couples really do want to try and save it. The goal of couples therapy is not to make a judgment on whether or not a couple should break up but to help partners understand one another. Some couples do eventually split, but from a much better place than they would have done. Many do give it that ‘extra go’ though and with great success. But that is always up to them.

What kinds of concerns do students bring to the Counseling Center?
There is a wide range of reasons and concerns for why students may come to the counseling center. Students may have questions about identity, depression, anxiety, body or eating concerns, stress, substance abuse and more. Even if a student is simply not feeling like themselves, they are welcome to try counseling to have their questions answered and to get them back to normal.

How do I find a therapist?
Most all colleges offer counseling centers for their students by well-trained professional counselors on campus. Counseling centers provided by the university shouldn't cost you any money and they will likely work to get you an appointment quickly.

How can I make the most of Therapy?
To make the most of your therapy experience, begin by being honest. You don't have to pretend to be okay with your therapist, and the more honest you are with them the more they will be able to help you. If you are unsure of what you want to get out of therapy it may be a good idea to start by thinking of some things you want to talk about on your visit. Make sure to attend your therapy sessions regularly and be active in the conversation. Lastly, if there is something you don't understand make sure to ask your therapist about any questions you may have.

Is what I say in counseling kept confidential?
Confidentiality is taken seriously by our counselors. This means that information about your counseling sessions or what is discussed in the session is not shared with anyone without expressed or written permission. If you are concerned about what you are saying in counseling being kept confidential then make sure to ask your counselor to outline their confidentiality agreement so that you can have peace of mind when speaking and sharing.

What can I expect from my first session?
Your innital appointment will be a little different then the rest of your counseling appointments. First, you'll be asked to fill out some paperwork and then the counselor will gather some information about why you are coming to counseling. During this time they will begin to evaluate what the next best steps may look like moving forward. And lastly, they will work to set up a plan with you to figure out how you can make the most of your time in counseling.

What do I do if I need help immediately?
If you or another student is experiencing an urgent need or is dealing with an emergency situation then you may call the center or come directly to the counseling center to get help. Please explain the urgency of the situation and describe what you are going through to receive the fastest attention possible.

What is considered an emergency or crisis situation?

How long will I be in counseling?
This is dependent on each student's individual situation and how therapy can help them personally. Your therapist can answer this question better after meeting with you.

Will I be referred off campus?
For most students, their time in counseling will entail a brief, goal focused counseling period. However, in some cases, students will be referred to other services if they are in need of more intensive treatment than we can provide.

What if I want to switch therapists?
It's likely that you will get along well with your therapist. However, if this is not the case and you would feel more comfortable with someone else then switching therapists may be a good decision for you. You can do this by letting your therapist or the administration know you would like to switch.

Can the Counseling Center write me a note for missing class?
Unfortunately, the Counseling Center cannot provide an excuse for why you are missing class. That's why it's important to schedule counseling sessions around your academic schedule so that you do not run into any unexcused absences.

Can a parent make an appointment at the Counseling Center for their student?
No, unfortunately, all appointments must be made by the student themselves.

What Should I expect in Counseling?
Counseling is a type of learning about oneself, one's feelings, and one's relationships with others. As in any learning environment, students will benefit most if they participate actively, attend sessions on time and are open and honest with the counselor.
In turn, the therapist will listen to the student's concerns, assist him/her in setting and reaching appropriate goals and will respect his/her confidentiality. Our staff abides by the ethical principles of our pertinent licensing boards and students can expect to have services delivered in a professional, legal and ethical manner.
During the first one or two sessions, the counselor will gather basic information about student concerns, overall health, daily life, goals for service and other background information. The counselor will assist you in establishing goals for your therapy. Throughout counseling, student and counselor work collaboratively. In addition to "talk-therapy" sessions, students are often encouraged to try out new behaviors, to use books and other resources to increase their understanding and coping skills.

What Is Considered an Emergency Crisis/ Situation?
An emergency/crisis experience is individually based, depending on what it feels like for you based on your “normal”. We encourage students to contact us for an emergency/crisis session if they feel it is indeed one. Some examples of a need for an emergency/crisis counseling session, include:
Imminent suicidal thought and/or a plan
Imminent homicidal thoughts
Severely losing emotional control
Gross impairment in thinking ability
Exhibiting bizarre behavior

Can Mountain Town Counseling write me a note for missing class?
Mountain Town Counseling cannot provide "notes" for absences from class, as you are expected to schedule counseling sessions around your academic schedule. If you are unable to attend class, please communicate with your professor to make up any missed work at your earliest convenience. If this is an emergency situation, please speak with your therapist and we can decide what plan of action to follow.

Does Mountain Town Counseling prescribe psychiatric medication?
Yes; we have a psychiatrist that can evaluate students for medications and prescribe them as needed during the fall and spring semesters. What is tele-therapy?
Tele-therapy is counseling done remotely by video call.

How do I set up tele-therapy counseling services?
Setting up Tele-Therapy Counseling works the same as setting up traditional face-to-face counseling: call and schedule. When appointment reminders are received, a link is included to the secure session.

Is tele-therapy priced differently?
Typically no, however, some insurance plans are currently allowing a lower out-of-pocket rate as a result of the pandemic. Check with your insurance provider.

Is Tele-Therapy effective?
Yes! Tele-therapy can just as successful and helpful as in-person therapy can be. Ultimately, it just comes down to your preference and the type of therapy that you prefer.
